Work Experience
All students in Year 10 will have the opportunity to participate in at least one week of work experience. Work experience week is held in Week 5 Term 4 each year. In a placement, students may observe a variety of tasks and, where appropriate, take part in supervised duties aligned with their skills and interests. A positive experience can also lead to future employment opportunities. After completing the mandatory week, students may be eligible to pursue additional placements if they wish to explore other industries or gain further experience in a chosen field.
Work Experience helps students to:
- Link classroom learning to the real world
- Put skills into practice in a work setting
- Explore potential careers and industries
- Understand the expectations of a workplace
- Identify further study, training or job pathways
- Make informed subject and career decisions
- Develop independence and confidence
Through this program, students will:
1. Develop workplace readiness skills, including communication, time management, responsibility, and professionalism
2. Demonstrate initiative and independence by taking ownership of finding and organising their placement
3. Understand the dynamic nature of the workforce, and how adaptability and lifelong learning are essential in preparing for future careers
4. Reflect on their own career interests and goals, using real-world insights to inform future subject and pathway choices
Steps to securing a placement:
- Complete your mandatory training here and submit your certificates on Google Classroom (Year 10) or email killarney-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au (other year groups)
- Contact employers to find a placement. Tips on how to do this are in the Student Information Package.
- Complete a Student Placement Record (SPR). All sections must be completed in full, in particular the risk assessment in Section 3.
- Submit SPR to the orange Careers Mailbox. Allow for 5 school weeks (Year 10 work experience week) and 2 weeks (any year group throughout the year) for school approval of your application.
A complete checklist is available in the Student Information Package.
