At Killarney Heights High School, the English Faculty is committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning community where every student is supported to achieve academic success and realise their full potential. Through the study of literature, language and texts, students develop a deeper understanding of how words can both reflect and shape the world around them. We empower students with the literacy skills and confidence to express their own values and experiences, advocate for change, and challenge prejudice and injustice.
Grounded in the principles of compassion, justice and fairness, our teaching equips students with the creative and critical thinking skills needed to navigate complexity, engage thoughtfully with others, and contribute meaningfully to an ever-changing world.
STAGES 4 AND 5 ENGLISH
In the study of English, students develop knowledge and skills to respond to and compose texts for a range of purposes. Students use strategies to read, view and listen to texts for understanding, challenge, interest and enjoyment. Students learn to analyse how meaning is created through the use and interpretation of increasingly complex language forms, features and structures. They examine, explain and evaluate how texts represent ideas and experiences and consider how texts can affirm or challenge values and attitudes. Students investigate and explain ways of valuing texts and the connections between texts. Students learn to craft personal, creative and critical texts for a range of audiences by experimenting with and controlling language forms and features to shape meaning. They use processes of planning, monitoring, revising and reflecting to purposefully develop and refine their composition of texts.
STAGE 6 ENGLISH
Through the study of English in Stage 6 students continue to develop their capacity to understand and use the English language for a variety of purposes and in various textual forms. Students engage with and explore a variety of texts that include widely acknowledged quality literature of past and contemporary societies. Through their responding and composing of both critical and creative texts, students develop an understanding of themselves and of diverse human experiences and cultures. The study of English in Stage 6 provides students with opportunities to experiment with ideas and expression, to become innovative, active, independent learners, to collaborate and to reflect on their learning.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:
