We teach Science at KHHS to foster curiosity, so that students ask more questions about our world. We empower students with critical thinking skills so that they can evaluate information and engage with life long learning. As informed citizens they can contribute meaningfully to society, with the goal of creating a more ethical and sustainable world through developing innovative solutions to problems.

Science is fundamental to understanding the world around us. At Killarney Heights High School, we encourage students to question, explore, investigate and discover. Science is a core learning subject for all students in Years 7 to 10, where students develop curiosity, practical investigation skills and the ability to think critically about evidence, data and ideas.

This Faculty comprises teachers who are experts in their subject areas, bringing strong scientific knowledge, professional experience and genuine enthusiasm for science into the classroom. We are incredibly fortunate to draw on this expertise to offer the full range of science courses in Years 11 and 12, allowing students to pursue their interests, strengths and future pathways across a broad range of scientific fields.

Preliminary and HSC Courses Offered

Investigating Science

Focuses on how scientific knowledge is developed, tested, analysed and communicated. Students engage with practical investigations, research, data and evidence to explore scientific issues that are relevant to individuals, communities and the wider world.

Earth and Environmental Science

Explores Earth’s systems, natural processes and environmental challenges. Students investigate topics such as Earth’s resources, natural hazards, climate science and sustainability, developing the knowledge and skills needed to understand and respond to current and future environmental issues.

Biology

Explores the diversity of life, from cells and body systems to ecosystems, genetics, disease and biotechnology. Students develop an understanding of how living things function, interact and respond to change, while considering the role of biological science in health, medicine, sustainability and ethical decision-making.

Chemistry

Investigates the structure, properties and reactions of matter. Students develop an understanding of elements, compounds, chemical processes and materials, while exploring how Chemistry contributes to innovation, industry, environmental monitoring, medicine and sustainable technologies.

Physics

Examines the fundamental principles that explain the physical world, including motion, forces, energy, waves, electricity and the nature of the universe. Students strengthen their mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills while exploring how Physics supports innovation in engineering, technology, energy and future industries.
