International Students

Killarney Heights High School welcomes international students from many countries and is recognised for a strong and committed international students’ program.

We seek to maximise the outcomes of individual students in all areas of the curriculum. The school works to develop self-confidence within students and commitment to personal excellence. We have enthusiastic teachers utilising their expertise to enhance the learning outcomes of our international students.

Special English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) programs are taught throughout the school at all levels by experienced and caring EAL/D teachers, including the HSC EAL/D course in which our students have achieved well above state average for the past five years.

The cross-cultural experience gives international students the opportunity to study alongside Australian students in a friendly, safe, multicultural environment. Interacting with our local students is a powerful educational tool that encourages mutual tolerance and understanding.

Staff members that work with international students help them adjust to their new surroundings with orientation days and a buddy system, and regular monitoring of their welfare, including contact with parents and guardians. We provide our students with English language support in various subjects and offer extra-curricular activities and excursions.

In 2020, a project Leading EAL/D Education at KHHS was undertaken to improve our Developing Phase EAL/D students learning outcomes. The project combined Instructional Rounds (IR), the strategy to investigate instructional practices within the school and to identify the impact of these practices on student learning, with EAL/D pedagogy. As a result, all teaching staff were trained in incorporating specific and evidence based EAL/D strategies into teaching, learning and assessment. This is the video summary of the project:
